A worked example in INR

Take a concrete case in India: a resident holds 225 grams of gold — worth about INR 1,435,741 at the indicative per-gram price on this page — plus INR 75,164 in savings. Combined zakatable wealth is INR 1,510,905. That clears the Nisab comfortably and, after a full lunar year, the Zakat is 2.5% of the combined figure: INR 37,773. Notice that the gold is not tested against the gold Nisab on its own here — in a mixed portfolio the assets are valued together in INR and tested once, which is how the calculators on this page proceed.

Paying Zakat in India: practical channels

In practice, most Zakat is paid through the same short list of routes: bank transfer to registered Zakat charities, local Zakat committees that collect and distribute within the community and mosque collections, especially around Jumu'ah and during Ramadan. What is owed was settled before any channel was chosen — net wealth tested against the INR Nisab (INR 50,109 on the silver standard) and charged at 2.5% — the channel only has to deliver that figure intact, to recipients who are genuinely eligible. For international giving, check the recipient end is genuinely Zakat-eligible rather than a general appeal, and note the transfer date beside your hawl anniversary in your records.

What counts as zakatable wealth in India

The zakatable list for a payer in India is the universal one — cash, deposits, gold and silver however held, trading stock, money owed to you, and investments priced in INR at market value. What does not count: your home in India, your car, household furniture and personal effects, plus anything you do not truly own or cannot reach. Debts due now come off before the Nisab test; then, if the net total has reached the threshold — INR 50,109 on the silver standard most scholars apply to cash in India and a lunar year has passed over it, 2.5% is the right of the poor in that wealth.

When is Zakat due for payers in India?

On your own hawl date: the Hijri anniversary of the day your wealth first reached the Nisab. Because a hawl is 354 days, in Gregorian terms the date arrives about eleven days sooner each year. Many people in India choose Ramadan for the reward — Ramadan 2027 begins on 8 February 2027 — but paying in Ramadan does not move a hawl that fell earlier; paying early is permitted, paying late without excuse is not.

Can I pay Zakat online from India?

Online payment from India is well established; what matters is the destination, not the medium. Two conditions govern it: that the recipient is Zakat-eligible under Quran 9:60 and that ownership of the money genuinely passes to them or their appointed agent. Use a platform's Zakat-specific fund where one exists, and note the Hijri date beside the Gregorian one — future-you, reconciling next year's hawl, will be grateful.

Where can I find Sehri and Iftar times for India in Ramadan 2027?
